In today’s complex utility environment, clear and effective communication is more important than ever. This course equips utility professionals with the skills needed to create and deliver relevant, impactful messages—both in writing and in person.

Through hands-on exercises, reflective writing, and real-world utility scenarios, participants learn how to communicate complex information, close communication gaps between internal teams and stakeholders, and connect with audiences in meaningful ways. The session reinforces writing fundamentals, the importance of preparation, and provides opportunities to practice public speaking skills.

Participants will also explore how AI tools can support stronger communication, including a practical introduction to prompting and editing techniques.

Course Outline

Communicating clearly and effectively is a skill that continues to grow in importance. Strong communication saves time, reduces risk, and supports effective leadership. This course focuses on listening, writing, and speaking as the core tools for connecting with teams and stakeholders.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Mapping your communication landscape and understanding audience needs
  • Turning complex utility concepts into clear, accessible messages
  • Learning and applying the five rules of strong business writing
  • Writing and delivering short, effective presentations
  • Creating a personal communication action plan
  • Receiving real-time feedback from peers and facilitators
  • Using practical templates and checklists for everyday communication

Technology note: This course relies heavily on tools such as Word, web search, and online collaboration platforms. Participants are asked to bring a laptop and, where possible, have access to an AI tool such as ChatGPT or Copilot.

While not required, familiarity with DiSC communication styles may enhance the learning experience.

This course is designed for utility professionals at all levels who want to improve how they communicate internally and externally.

It is particularly valuable for individuals who regularly explain complex utility concepts to diverse audiences. Course content has been updated based on participant feedback from previous Effective Business Communications sessions.

Cancellations received in writing ten (10) working days prior to the course date will receive a full refund, less a 20% service fee (plus 13% HST). No refunds will be issued after this period.

Substitution of registrants from the same company may be made up to the course date.

The MEARIE Group reserves the right to postpone or cancel any course due to low enrollment. In such cases, participants will receive a full refund or may transfer their registration to a future session.

How do I register?

How do I see training I have registered for?

I haven't received my certificate, what do I do?

Who provides the courses?

MEARIE is the provider of these courses in partnership with various subject matter experts. All of these experts have extensive experience within their respective fields, as practitioners and/or industry consultants.

Will I receive confirmation of my enrolment?

Yes. When you register for the course, a confirmation email will automatically be sent to you.

Are courses available online or in-person?

Courses may be offered online or in-person. Please consult the course's page and date to verify in which format it is being offered. Several of our more popular courses are offered in both formats throughout the year. Be sure to check out course options at www.MEARIE.ca/Training.

What technology do I require to take an online course?

Yes. We recommend using technology with both audio and video capability. We use ZOOM, so be sure it is installed on your computer. It is helpful if you use headphones to help hear one another clearly. As some sessions are interactive, we request the video function be turned on. While the session will work on a tablet, we recommend a desktop or laptop computer as the experience is more engaging and rewarding. A link to the session will be sent via email to you prior to the session. We encourage you to login a minimum of 5-minutes prior to the session start to ensure you successfully connect to the session. 

For online courses, can I use a tablet or phone?

We recommend using a computer for both audio and video capability. While the session will work on a tablet, using a computer provides a more interactive experience. We do not recommend using a phone.
