Navigating the complexities of rate applications can be challenging. This session explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can enhance the efficiency, accuracy, and defensibility of utility rate applications by supporting data analysis, forecasting, documentation, and regulatory compliance.

Through practical examples and hands-on activities, participants will learn how AI tools can simplify data management, improve decision-making, and reduce the overall time investment required to prepare rate applications. Real-world insights from Elenchus will demonstrate how AI can be applied effectively while maintaining accuracy and compliance.

Course Outline

The following topics will be covered:

  • Current challenges and opportunities in utility rate applications
  • Using AI to analyze historical data patterns
  • Drafting clear and accurate technical descriptions
  • Checking calculations and regulatory compliance
  • Creating compelling visual summaries
  • Reviewing real examples from successful rate applications
  • Maintaining accuracy while reducing preparation time

Instructors will use the latest paid version of ChatGPT during the session. Participants are encouraged to have access to a paid ChatGPT account to fully engage in numeric, analytical, and visualization exercises. The techniques explored are also expected to work with tools such as Copilot, Gemini, or Claude.

Completion of ChatGPT 101 or a strong familiarity and comfort with using ChatGPT is strongly recommended.

This course is designed for individuals involved in the rate application process or strategic planning within LDCs.

It is particularly suited to Finance and Regulatory Specialists and Managers who have experience participating in the development and/or submission of rate filings.

Cancellations received in writing ten (10) working days prior to the course date will receive a full refund, less a 20% service fee (plus 13% HST). No refunds will be issued after this period.

How do I register?

Are courses available online or in-person?

What technology do I require to take an online course?

Yes. We recommend using technology with both audio and video capability. We use ZOOM, so be sure it is installed on your computer. It is helpful if you use headphones to help hear one another clearly. As some sessions are interactive, we request the video function be turned on. While the session will work on a tablet, we recommend a desktop or laptop computer as the experience is more engaging and rewarding. A link to the session will be sent via email to you prior to the session. We encourage you to login a minimum of 5-minutes prior to the session start to ensure you successfully connect to the session. 

For online courses, can I use a tablet or phone?

We recommend using a computer for both audio and video capability. While the session will work on a tablet, using a computer provides a more interactive experience. We do not recommend using a phone.
