Effective Leadership Skills for Supervisors in Technical Trades is a two-day course designed to equip Utility Supervisors, Department Managers, and Front Line Supervisors with the skills and knowledge required to manage technical and trade-based work crews.

Participants develop practical leadership, communication, and supervisory skills to manage workplace responsibilities, define accountabilities, and lead teams effectively. The course uses proven strategies and real-world utility examples to support supervisors in balancing operational demands, people management, and organizational expectations.

  • Format: In-person, two-day course
  • Includes: Materials, breakfast, lunch, and refreshment breaks

Course Outline

Participants will be presented with the skills, best practices, and knowledge required to improve supervisory effectiveness through practical, work-related examples.

  • Fundamentals of supervisory levels and roles within the organization
  • Employee and team structures, including motivation strategies
  • Effective communication channels and documentation practices
  • Utility processes related to performance, expectations, and accountability
  • Tailboard Talk Sheets, site and hazard assessments, and health and safety due diligence
  • Working effectively within a Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Time and stress management techniques
  • Short- and long-term planning, including project-based work
  • Leadership authority, responsibility, and accountability

Content includes:

  • Team motivation strategies and reinforcement techniques
  • Active listening, effective speaking, and non-verbal communication
  • Inclusive and resilient leadership styles
  • Performance evaluations and managing expectations
  • Conflict management and difficult conversations
  • Generational communication and motivation strategies
  • Action planning and implementation

Workshop activities include:

  • Topic-specific case studies
  • Project-related assignments
  • Team-based exercises
  • Roundtable discussions

This course is designed for Utility Supervisors, Department Managers, and Front Line Supervisors working in technical or trade-based environments.

Participants should be in a supervisory role or in training for a supervisory position where managing staff is a core responsibility.

Breakfast: Complimentary breakfast available starting at 7:30 AM (voucher provided upon arrival)

Cancellations received in writing ten (10) working days prior to the course date will receive a full refund, less a 20% service fee (plus 13% HST). No refunds will be issued after this period.

Substitution of registrants from the same company may be made up to the course date.

How do I register?

How do I see training I have registered for?

Who provides the courses?

Will I receive confirmation of my enrolment?

Yes. When you register for the course, a confirmation email will automatically be sent to you.

Are courses available online or in-person?

Courses may be offered online or in-person. Please consult the course's page and date to verify in which format it is being offered. Several of our more popular courses are offered in both formats throughout the year. Be sure to check out course options at www.MEARIE.ca/Training.

What technology do I require to take an online course?

Yes. We recommend using technology with both audio and video capability. We use ZOOM, so be sure it is installed on your computer. It is helpful if you use headphones to help hear one another clearly. As some sessions are interactive, we request the video function be turned on. While the session will work on a tablet, we recommend a desktop or laptop computer as the experience is more engaging and rewarding. A link to the session will be sent via email to you prior to the session. We encourage you to login a minimum of 5-minutes prior to the session start to ensure you successfully connect to the session. 

For online courses, can I use a tablet or phone?

We recommend using a computer for both audio and video capability. While the session will work on a tablet, using a computer provides a more interactive experience. We do not recommend using a phone.
