Effective Leadership Skills for Lead Hands is a two-day course designed to address the wide range of supervisory functions and performance-based processes faced by Lead Hands overseeing utility work crews. Participants work through realistic, industry-based scenarios that reflect everyday challenges in the field.

This course is well suited for current Lead Hands and those being considered for the role, providing practical tools to strengthen leadership skills, accountability, and day-to-day supervision.

  • Format: In-person, two-day course

Course Outline

Participants will be presented with the skills, best practices, and knowledge required to manage workplace responsibilities and define supervisory accountabilities using proven strategies and work-related examples.

  • Explain the fundamentals of supervisory levels and roles within the organization
  • Define employees, team structures, and strategies for motivating staff
  • Discuss the benefits and channels of effective communication within the organization
  • Describe utility processes related to performance expectations and accountability for Lead Hands, supervisors, managers, and teams
  • Identify key components of Tailboard Talk Sheets, site and hazard assessments, and health and safety systems supporting due diligence
  • Interpret and apply skills required to work effectively within a Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Recognize the importance of time and stress management techniques
  • Construct effective job and business models to support short-term and long-term goals, including projects

It is also well suited for participants working in positions where specific duties and accountabilities require the supervision of staff.

Course Date: February 5-6, 2026
Time: 8:30 AM – approximately 4:30 PM each day
Breakfast: Complimentary breakfast available daily starting at 7:30 AM (voucher available upon arrival)

Early Bird pricing is available up to four (4) weeks prior to the session date.

Cancellations received in writing ten (10) working days prior to the course date will receive a full refund, less a 20% service fee (plus 13% HST). No refunds will be issued after this period.

Substitution of registrants from the same company may be made up to the course date.

The MEARIE Group reserves the right to postpone or cancel any course due to low enrollment. In such cases, participants will receive a full refund or may transfer their registration to a future session.

How do I register?

Will I receive confirmation of my enrolment?

Are courses available online or in-person?

Courses may be offered online or in-person. Please consult the course's page and date to verify in which format it is being offered. Several of our more popular courses are offered in both formats throughout the year. Be sure to check out course options at www.MEARIE.ca/Training.

What technology do I require to take an online course?

Yes. We recommend using technology with both audio and video capability. We use ZOOM, so be sure it is installed on your computer. It is helpful if you use headphones to help hear one another clearly. As some sessions are interactive, we request the video function be turned on. While the session will work on a tablet, we recommend a desktop or laptop computer as the experience is more engaging and rewarding. A link to the session will be sent via email to you prior to the session. We encourage you to login a minimum of 5-minutes prior to the session start to ensure you successfully connect to the session. 

For online courses, can I use a tablet or phone?

We recommend using a computer for both audio and video capability. While the session will work on a tablet, using a computer provides a more interactive experience. We do not recommend using a phone.
